There are literally thousands of pre-made affiliate products out there to promote, so why on earth would you want to create your own?

If your Internet Marketing Business model involves selling information products you have two options – promote products as an affiliate, or produce them yourself.

In case you haven’t noticed, there are information products out there for pretty much anything the mind can think of, already made, so my question to you again is; why on earth would you want to make your own products if someone else has already done all of the hard work for you?

Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of creating your own products, and revisit the question at the end of this article.

-

Pros of Creating Your Own Products

  • The profits from sales are typically all yours.
  • You control everything about the product, from the content, to it’s price, to it’s availability.
  • You can focus on making the product super awesome, and work with affiliates of your own to drive the traffic and make sales.
  • You can be responsible for creating the sales page, affiliate banners, sometimes the ads, and sometimes even the email series you want your affiliates to use – which is a distinct pro if this is something you are good at.  Let your affiliates generate traffic and rely on your strength as a copywriter.
  • Self-Branding: Having your name, or a pen name you use again, on a product helps brand the author making it easier to promote new products.

Cons of Creating Your Own Products

  • You have to make the product (or have it made) – which will incur both time and dollar costs usually.
  • You might have to split the profits if you have affiliates helping you promote the product (not that big of a con since you are likely to get more sales this way that you wouldn’t otherwise have had).
  • You will be responsible for creating the sales page, affiliate banners, sometimes the ads, and sometimes even the email series you want your affiliates to use.

Of course, all of the product creation, the sales copy, affiliate banners and artwork can all be outsourced, and while this will cost you money, done right it’s going to be worth the time it saves you in not having to do it yourself.

Question: Why on earth would you want to make your own products if someone else has already done all of the hard work for you?

Answer: Promoting products as an affiliate might make entry into a niche faster,  but the real value comes when you make your own products, and brand yourself as an authority.

A better use of affiliate products is to gauge the market – start promoting as an affiliate and create your own products for well-performing sites.

Do you prefer to promote as an affiliate, or create your own products?
